Drive to the remote Westfjords and the Snaefellsnes peninsula to discover some of the most beautiful landscapes in Iceland, well away from the tourist crowds, where you have great chances of seeing the northern lights.

Below is a 6 day / 5 night sample itinerary to give you a general idea of our Aurora On The Beach trip starting from Keflavik:

Day 1 - Arrival & Borgarfjordur

Arrival at KEF airport. Drive up north to Borgarfjordur where you can go off the beaten path to visit the Europe's most powerful hot spring, and the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. Spend the afternoon relaxing in a natural hot pot before driving to the valleys for a breathtaking sunset.
Overnight at a country hotel near the Fellsstrond beach with a beautiful view over the Breidafjordur fjord and the Snaefellsnes peninsula, a fantastic backdrop for the Northern Lights.

Day 2 - Southern Westfjords & Hot springs

Drive to the Southern Westfjords stopping en route to visit an elf hill. Spend the afternoon relaxing in a natural hot spring right by the sea with beautiful views over the Breidafjordur Bay.
Spend the next two nights in Patreksfjordur, a fantastic base for exploring the beautiful natural landscape of the Southern Westfjords and the surrounding villages.

Day 3 - Westfjords villages & fjords

Explore the remote and picturesque villages of the Southern Westfjords.
From Bildudalur, take the lesser travelled road to the Ketildalir and Selardalur valleys, known for their spectacular landscape and quirky art.
Spend the afternoon relaxing in the Pollurinn springs. Perched on a hill, they offer stunning views of the fjord and sea.

Day 4 - Latrabjarg, Raudasandur & Dynjandi

Depending on the weather and road conditions, today you can visit the dramatic Latrabjarg cliffs; the golden and red sand beaches surrounding it; and Dynjandi waterfall.
Take an early evening ferry from the Westfjords to the Snaefellsnes peninsula where you will spend two nights in Stykkisholmur.

Day 5 - Snaefellsnes

Visit the colourful Berserkjahraun lava fields and the iconic Kirkjufell mountain before driving around the glacier and Snaefellsnes National Park. Black sand beaches with amazing beach rock formations, charming fishing villages, scattered craters and more...

Day 6 - Hvalfjordur

Drive back to Keflavik stopping to visit basalt cliffs and craters, and look out for seals along the coast. It is also possible to visit the Settlement Centre in Borgarnes to learn about the first Viking settlers of Iceland.

Since the northern lights are only visible during late summer and winter, and the itinerary requires some driving on gravel roads, we only offer a 4X4 SUV for self-drive holidays.
For private tours, we offer a variety of comfortable vehicles for different group sizes with a local guide.

Self-drive:
The minimum driver age for is 20 years for smaller cars and 25 years for jeeps. Drivers must bring an international driving licence or a local driving licence written in a Roman script. Winter driving experience is strongly recommended.
